Private School Entrance Exams
There are many excellent private schools, which require prospective students to sit an a private school entrance examination. For the majority of schools the topics examined are Math, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. The schools need a bench mark and evidence so they can cater for the student’s educational needs. Preparing students for the 11 Plus is the ideal way to cover the depth of subjects required. This preparation also enables student to aim for scholarship places.
Many private schools offer a variety of scholarships. These can range from sport, drama, music and academic depending on the school. Scholarships are usually for the entire career of the student at the school so can be very financially advantageous. The value of the scholarship is usually a percentage of the fees and typically ranges from 10% to 25% depending on the school and their current policy.
Interviewing candidates and their parents is common with students often being asked to give a short presentation. We have sessions on interviewing skills at all levels and are fully experienced in guiding students and parents through the preparation for the exams and the interviews. Guidance and advice is also available on putting together a project to display at the interviews.
Over 30 years in preparing children for private school entrance exams we have never had a student turned down for an independent (private) school place, with many of our students being offered scholarships.
Our successful students have been offered scholarships at:
- St Mary's Colchester
- Ipswich School
- Royal Hospital School
- New Hall Chelmsford
- Brentwood School
- Woodbridge School
- Colchester High School
- St Joseph's College
These offer reduced school fees for the entire time a student attends the school; in real terms these are worth thousands of pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I enrol?
Students are able to join our lessons all year round, although we do recommend starting as soon as possible with us. This will allow your child to get the best head start for their year group.
Before enrolling with us, we do require that your child completes an assessment with us. This will allow us to see what level they are currently working at in Maths and English and plan out the next steps in their educational journey.
How are the lessons structured?
Our Year 1 lessons run for two hours once per week. During this time, we will cover Maths and English. We work a step up from the National Curriculum to ensure that your child is well prepared for school.
We understand that at this age, children have a lot of energy so our lessons are very interactive with the children moving around between different work stations in their classroom.
Your child will then go home feeling confident, happy and clever. They will have a little bit of homework to complete and spellings to learn for their next lesson.
What is the ratio in the classes?
Class sizes are a maximum of 6 students with each group being led by a tutor with a mentor on hand to help out. As a result, we will always provide a minimum of 1:3 ratio with our younger students.
How do I get feedback on how my child is doing?
Our tutors feedback at the end of every lesson to parents. They will explain what was covered in the lesson and what homework has been set.
If you would like to get some feedback, your tutor will be more than happy to speak to you at the end of the lesson as to how your child is getting on.
How are lessons paid for?
Lessons are paid for monthly in advance via direct debit or with childcare vouchers. We are proudly OFSTED registered meaning that we are able to accept a variety of childcare vouchers such as:
- Government Tax Free Childcare Scheme
- Edenred
- Computershare
- Bravo Benefits
- CCGPS
- KiddiVouchers
- Sodexo
- Co-op
